Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter was on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay quickly was captivated when she showed her an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example how art could serve as an activist vehicle. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was in her university. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of a member of the jury, and then look through their trash. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was handed and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
